Detective Comics Reveals the Perfect Life Batman Wants But Raises One Major Question
Bruce Wayne experienced his dream life through the Black Mercy, but the life he deeply desires raises questions over his cruel treatment of a family member from his future.

When it comes to family, Bruce Wayne is either the luckiest or unluckiest bloke on Earth-0, depending on one’s point of view. On the one hand, the trauma of seeing his parents murdered in an alleyway set him on the path to eternally battle crime as the Batman. On the other hand, being Batman has allowed Bruce to find a new family, namely in the form of his four Robins and three Batgirls. In addition to his Batfamily, Bruce has a huge support system in the form of the Justice League Unlimited.
By all accounts, Bruce got back the one thing that he lost and should be happy. Whilst it’s long been established that he loves Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Barbara Gordon, Cassandra Cain, Duke Thomas, and Stephanie Brown, he also has complicated relationships with Jason Todd, Helena Bertinelli, and Damian Wayne. Jason is the son he failed to protect, Damian is the son he didn’t expect, and Helena was the daughter he once had before Crisis on Infinite Earths reworked her with a mafia origin.
Bruce’s idea of a perfect family life takes centre stage in the first half of Detective Comics Annual #1 (2026) by Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott. Although the storyline sees the Dark Knight team up with Lobo to solve a murder mystery he was framed for, the story actually focuses on Bruce’s most painful reality: the fact that he doesn’t have the family life he truly wants. This is exposed by the Black Mercy, a parasitic plant that consumes its victim by paralysing and trapping them in a pleasant dream.
As one might expect, Bruce’s ideal family features all the people who have impacted his life in a positive way. But one surprise individual that shows up in his pleasant dream is a family member from his future he met fairly recently and cruelly turned away after his life was saved. This discrepancy raises a major question over how he really feels about this one family member and his cruel treatment of them.
